The double name given to this culture is due, in part, to the fact that it developed in an area that includes the department of Nariño, in the far south of Colombia, and the province of Carchi, in the north of Ecuador. This purely territorial division has made research difficult and for this very reason there is still a lack of more extensive documentation on a very rich culture that developed in this region from approximately the 8th century AD and that was characterized by being a society of merchants, farmers and shepherds.
