In 1987, Eduardo Chillida painted the textile that we show at Nómada on the occasion of the exhibition that was held at the Miramar Palace, san Sebastian, from November 5, 1987 to January 10, 1988 in tribute to Cristóbal Balenciaga. The painting with the logo was created by Chillida in ink on canvas for and in honor of his friend Balenciaga.
Chillida created this work in fabric, a material that the couturier used to create his artistic work: dresses. The existence of a work by the artist Eduardo Chillida on a canvas would have an exceptional character that could give it an added value, especially when the reason for having made said work on this medium was part of the tribute to his friend Cristóbal Balenciaga.
We also exhibit, along with the fabric, some original posters from the year 1987 exhibition.
This logo has subsequently remained as the corporate image of the Cristóbal Balenciaga Foundation in Getaria.
Balenciaga and Chillida, two men ahead of their time who were universal Basques, and whose work have gone beyond our borders and into the world. Together with Elcano, they are our most universal Gipuzkoans.
The work, which has remained in a private collection until now, had fold marks, mold and staining of the ink on the white surface. At Nómada we carried out the textile restoration in 2020.
The textile “Homage to Balenciaga” will be exhibited at Nómada until May 11, 2024.
