This large vintage Qashqai rug features a central medallion, surrounded by a field filled with a variety of motifs. The weavers incorporated two vertical “trees of life” that point toward the medallion, with two additional, thinner trees running across the entire surface. The field is richly adorned with a charming array of scattered motifs, including birds, peacocks, flowers, geometric patterns, and small trees and bushes. This lively design creates a striking contrast with the more formal, geometrically arranged border.
Given its size, the rug was likely woven in a village, as a nomadic weaver would not have had the means to transport such a large loom. However, the design elements, structure, and use of goat hair in the warp reflect a recent nomadic heritage.
The rug is in full pile overall, with some areas showing a low to medium pile.

Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
