A playful vintage Qashqai rug featuring a design made up of squares within a grid. This rug exudes energy, movement, and rhythm.
It’s interesting to note that the motifs within the squares are repeated throughout the entire field of the rug, creating the effect of a flower-filled meadow. The borders are minimal, almost secondary, allowing the main field of the rug to take center stage.
The color palette is vibrant and bright, and the wool is long, soft, and shiny. In the green square, the pile is slightly lower, but it will still withstand heavy traffic well.
Please note that there is a slight difference in the width of the rug: one end measures 134 cm, while the other measures 125 cm. This is relatively common, as nomadic weavers often moved with their looms and wove without a set pattern, creating designs from memory.
Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool
Size: 253×134 cms (125 at one of the extremes)
Origin: Qashqai tribe, Iran
Date of weaving: 1970
Turkic-speaking pastoral nomadic tribal groups began entering central and southern Iran during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Qashqai, as a large tribal unit, dates back at least to the early eighteenth century, when some Turkish(Turki)-speaking tribal groups in the region existed under the name Qashqai.
Qashqai kilims are best known for their boldness and and freedom in the way the pattern is drawn. An aesthetically pleasing geometry, the fineness of their wool and their clear, strong colours combine to ensure their reputation as superlative examples.
