Rare Semi-Antique Baluch Runner from Iran – Inspired by early Islamic architecture

This fascinating semi-antique Baluch runner from Iran features a rare and distinctive design. Originally crafted as a saddlebag, it has been carefully opened and repurposed into a hallway runner, adding to its unique character and history.

At the heart of the medallion lies an unusual star, strongly reminiscent of early Islamic decoration. Intriguingly, its design bears a striking resemblance to motifs found in 13th-century Seljuk rugs from Turkey. While its exact inspiration remains a mystery, one can imagine that the weaver encountered a similar pattern—perhaps in the intricate tiles of an ancient mosque or on a piece of historic ceramic—and skillfully incorporated it into the rug’s design.

The weaving is exceptionally fine, with all-natural dyes. This ex-saddlebag combines flatweave and knotted techniques and still retains the original loops from its former function, preserving a piece of its history.

A truly one-of-a-kind piece that bridges past and present through craftsmanship and artistry.
