A  semi-antique Bakhtiari rug from the 1950s, with the field divided into compartments produced by weaving an ogival lattice pattern. The Bakhtiari woman has woven the well known Khesti design (garden motif). The carpet is sectioned in to numerous decorative  circles, wherein smaller motifs are woven. Common motifs include flowers, Cyprus trees and the Tree of Life design as can be seen this medium-sized Bakhtiari rug. Some of the ogival shaped patterns hold birds ( peacocks?) holding a very unusual shapped motif, perhaps a flower. To be noted are also the roses, woven very realistically.

The warp and weft are of cotton. The carpet has been woven with a high knot density, the wool is nice and soft and it is in mint condition with a full pile.

Material: 100% hand-spun sheep wool

Size: 203×138 cms

Origin: Bakhtiari tribe, Iran

Date of weaving: 1950

The Bakhtiari (also spelled Bakhtiyari; Persian: بختیاری) are a Lur tribe from Iran. They speak the Bakhtiari dialect of the Luri language.

Bakhtiaris primarily inhabit Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari and eastern Khuzestan, Lorestan, Bushehr, and Isfahan provinces.

A small percentage of Bakhtiari are still nomadic pastoralists, migrating between summer quarters and winter quarters. Numerical estimates of their total population vary widely.

Due to their luck of escaping danger throughout their history, they called themselves bakhtiyar (“fortunate”).
