An antique Kurdish kilim woven with soumak technique by an ethnic Kurdish woman. Originally, this kilim formed part of a mafrash or suitcase used by Kurdish nomadic people.
The design is formed by a set of repeated motifs that occupy the whole surface of the piece. Whilst identical insize and shape, they vary in the way the colours have been arranged. Alternate rows have of the main motifs have been “split” by a horizontal row.
All dyes are natural, with a lovely red, mustard and blue and green tones.

Kurds or Kurdish people are an Iranian ethnic group native to a mountainous region of Western Asia known as Kurdistan, which spans southeastern Turkey, northwestern Iran, northern Iraq, and northern Syria. There are exclaves of Kurds in Central Anatolia, Khorasan, and the Caucasus, as well as significant Kurdish diaspora communities in the cities of western Turkey (in particular Istanbul) and Western Europe (primarily in Germany). The Kurdish population is estimated to be between 30 and 45 million.
