To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world by the Basque sailor Juan Sebastián Elcano, we designed a rug called “Elkano”, which has been woven in a Fair Trade Workshop in Nepal. We have chosen to represent this historic event with a contemporary design.
Our shop, Nómada, is located in San Sebastián, a few kilometers from Getaria, the hometown of ElKano and we wanted to take part in the 500th anniversary commemorative events, both in the Basque Country and in the rest of Spain, of this great achievement for humanity. The carpet was designed by one of Nómada´s partners, the architect Alistair Baird. The idea was to represent the departure and arrival of the expedition as two “shores”. Elkano returns to the same place, but it has changed slightly in the three years have passed, traversing a sea full of uncertainty, but also full of beauty and opportunities to discover.
After six months of work, the carpet is with us at Nómada. In addition, through the design of this carpet in Gipuzkoa province and woven in Nepal, a new Fair Trade route has emerged.
