This antique rug from Karaja has an unusual deep indigo blue background, unlike most rugs from this region which are red or terracotta. The warp and weft are cotton, while the rug is knotted with wool and combines lovely shades of soft terracotta, salmon blue and ivory. The rug dates from around 1900. A hard to find narrow size antique runner, ideal for a hall or hallway.

Oriental Karaja rugs (also spelled Karadja, Gharadjeh, Qaraajeh, Gharajeh) are woven in a small isolated village located in the northwestern region of Iran, about 35 miles from the weaving center of Tabriz.
These rugs are relatively easy to identify, although some of their designs and construction can be confused with rugs from the nearby Heriz and Hamadan areas.
A typical design used in oriental Karaja rug weaving features a field of tile or red covered with Heriz-style repeating geometric medallions.
The motifs are bold and can resemble insects, leaves, and crabs. Karaja rugs can also have floral patterns, such as paisley or pear patterns, usually set within diamond shapes.
